Germany and India: Cultural Encounters, Knowledge Exchange and Contemporary Connections is an interdisciplinary scholarly volume that explores the historical, cultural, intellectual, educational and contemporary connections between Germany and India.
The relationship between Germany and India extends far beyond conventional diplomatic and economic engagement. Over centuries, encounters between the two societies have generated significant exchanges of ideas, knowledge, languages, literature, philosophy, education, science, art, cultural practices and institutional experiences. In the contemporary period, these connections have expanded through higher education, academic mobility, research collaborations, migration, cultural institutions, internationalisation and digital communication.
This volume seeks to bring together diverse perspectives on these Germany–India encounters and knowledge exchanges, examining how ideas and cultural practices move across geographical and institutional boundaries, how they are received and transformed, and how new forms of transnational connections emerge.
The volume is situated within the broader field of Global Studies, recognising that contemporary relationships between societies cannot be understood solely through the traditional frameworks of international relations, diplomacy or economics. Instead, they must also be examined through the movement of people, knowledge, culture, education, intellectual traditions and social practices.
The volume welcomes interdisciplinary research addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:
Historical encounters between Germany and India

The principal objective of this volume is to create an interdisciplinary platform for scholars, researchers, academics, practitioners and emerging researchers to examine the multiple dimensions of Germany–India cultural and knowledge relations.
The volume particularly encourages approaches that move beyond a purely country-to-country comparison. Germany and India are approached as interconnected spaces where knowledge, culture, people and ideas travel, interact and acquire new meanings.
By bringing together historical and contemporary perspectives, the volume intends to demonstrate how cultural encounters and knowledge exchange contribute to the formation of contemporary international relationships.
The volume welcomes original scholarly contributions from:
